+ First Reading: Ephesians 6:1-9

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise:

3 "that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth." *Deuteronomy 5:16

4 You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5 Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ;

6 not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

7 with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men;

8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.

9 You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

*6:3: Deuteronomy 5:16

-----

+ Psalm: Psalms 145:10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14

10 All your works will give thanks to you, Yahweh.
Your saints will extol you.

11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and talk about your power;

12 to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts,
the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
Yahweh is faithful in all his words,
and loving in all his deeds.*

14 Yahweh upholds all who fall,
and raises up all those who are bowed down.

*145:13: Some manuscripts omit these last two lines.

+ Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

22 He went on his way through cities and villages, teaching, and traveling on to Jerusalem.

23 One said to him, "Lord, are they few who are saved?"
He said to them,

24 "Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in, and will not be able.

25 When once the master of the house has risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' then he will answer and tell you, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'

26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.'

27 He will say, 'I tell you, I don't know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.'

28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets, in the Kingdom of God, and yourselves being thrown outside.

29 They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in the Kingdom of God.

30 Behold, there are some who are last who will be first, and there are some who are first who will be last."

+ Today's Reading: The Wisdom Of Solomon 4:1-20

1 Better than this is childishness with virtue;
For in the memory * of virtue is immortality:
Because it is recognized both before God and before men.

2 When it is present, men imitate it;
And they long after it when it is departed:
And † throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph,
Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled.

3 But the multiplying brood of the ungodly shall be of no profit,
And ‡ with bastard § slips they shall not strike deep root,
Nor shall they establish a sure hold.

4 For even if these ** put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they shall be shaken by the wind,
And by the violence of winds they shall be rooted out.

5 Their branches shall be broken off before they come to maturity,
and their fruit shall be useless,
Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing.

6 For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness
Against parents when God searcheth them out.

7 But a righteous man, though he die before his time, shall be at rest.

8 (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time,
Nor is its measure given by number of years:

9 But understanding is gray hairs to men,
And an unspotted life is ripe old age.)

10 Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him,
And while living among sinners he was translated:

11 He was caught away, lest †† wickedness should change his understanding,
Or guile deceive his soul.

12 (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good,
And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.)

13 Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long ‡‡ years;

14 For his soul was pleasing to the Lord:
Therefore §§ hasted he out of the midst of wickedness.

15 But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not,
Neither laying *** this to heart,
That grace and mercy are with his chosen,
And that ††† he visiteth his holy ones:-

16 But a righteous man that is dead shall condemn the ungodly that are living,
And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man's old age;

17 For the ungodly shall see a wise man's end,
And shall not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him,
And for what he safely kept him:-

18 They shall see, and they shall despise;
But them the Lord shall laugh to scorn.
And after this they shall become a dishonored carcase,
And ‡‡‡ a reproach among the dead for ever:

19 Because he shall dash them speechless to the ground,
And shall shake them from the foundations,
And they shall §§§ lie utterly waste, and they shall be in anguish,
And their memory shall perish.

20 They shall come, * when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear;
And their lawless deeds shall convict them to their face.

+ Saints: St. Alonso Rodriguez

-----

+ First Reading: Ephesians 5:21-33

21 subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ.

22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body.

24 But as the assembly is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their own husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it;

26 that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

29 For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly;

30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones.

31 "For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh."*Genesis 2:24

32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly.

33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

*5:31: Genesis 2:24

-----

+ Psalm: Psalms 128:1-5

1 Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh,
who walks in his ways.

2 For you will eat the labor of your hands.
You will be happy, and it will be well with you.

3 Your wife will be as a fruitful vine,
in the innermost parts of your house;
your children like olive plants,
around your table.

4 Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears Yahweh.

5 May Yahweh bless you out of Zion,
and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

+ Gospel: Luke 13:18-21

18 He said, "What is the Kingdom of God like? To what shall I compare it?

19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and put in his own garden. It grew, and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky lodged in its branches."

20 Again he said, "To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God?

21 It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures *literally, three sata. 3 sata is about 39 litres or a bit more than a bushelof flour, until it was all leavened."

*13:21: literally, three sata. 3 sata is about 39 litres or a bit more than a bushel

+ Today's Reading: The Wisdom Of Solomon 3:1-19

1 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
And no torment shall touch them.

2 In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died;
And their departure was accounted to be their hurt,

3 And their journeying away from us to be their ruin:
But they are in peace.

4 For even if in the sight of men they be punished,
Their hope is full of immortality;

5 And having borne a little chastening, they shall receive great good;
Because God made trial of them, and found them worthy of himself.

6 As gold in the furnace he proved them,
And as a whole burnt offering he accepted them.

7 And in the time of their visitation they shall shine forth,
And as sparks among stubble they shall run to and fro.

8 They shall judge nations, and have dominion over peoples;
And the Lord shall reign over them for evermore.

9 They that trust on him shall understand truth,
And * the faithful shall abide with him in love;
Because grace and mercy are to his chosen.

10 But the ungodly shall be requited even as they reasoned,
They which lightly regarded † the righteous man, and revolted from the Lord;

11 (For he that sets at nothing wisdom and discipline is miserable;)
And void is their hope and their toils unprofitable,
And useless are their works:

12 Their wives are foolish, and wicked are their children;

13 Accursed is their begetting.
Because happy is the barren that is undefiled,
She who has not conceived in transgression;
She shall have fruit when God visiteth souls.

14 And happy is the eunuch which has wrought no lawless deed with his hands,
Nor imagined wicked things against the Lord;
For there shall be given him for his faithfulness ‡ a peculiar favor,
And a lot in the sanctuary of the Lord more delightsome than wife or children.

15 For good labors have fruit of great renown;
And the root of understanding can't fail.

16 But children of adulterers shall not come to maturity,
And the seed of an unlawful bed shall vanish away.

17 For if they live long, they shall be held in no account,
And at the last their old age shall be without honor.

18 And if they die quickly, they § shall have no hope,
Nor in the day of decision shall they have consolation.

19 For ** the end of an unrighteous generation is always grievous.

*3:9: Or, they that are faithful through love shall abide with him

†3:10: Or, that which is righteous

‡3:14: Or, the grace of God's chosen Gr. a chosen grace.

§3:18: Some authorities read have

**3:19: Gr. the ends...are grievous.

+ First Reading: Ephesians 4:32-5:8

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

5:1 Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children.

2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

3 But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints;

4 nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate; but rather giving of thanks.

5 Know this for sure, that no sexually immoral person, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.

7 Therefore don't be partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

+ Psalm: Psalms 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6

1 Blessed is the man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand on the path of sinners,
nor sit in the seat of scoffers;

2 but his delight is in Yahweh's*"Yahweh" is God's proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations. law.
On his law he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water,
that brings forth its fruit in its season,
whose leaf also does not wither.
Whatever he does shall prosper.

4 The wicked are not so,
but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

6 For Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked shall perish.

+ Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

10 He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day.

11 Behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent over, and could in no way straighten herself up.

12 When Jesus saw her, he called her, and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity."

13 He laid his hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight, and glorified God.

14 The ruler of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the multitude, "There are six days in which men ought to work. Therefore come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day!"

15 Therefore the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each one of you free his ox or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath, and lead him away to water?

16 Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound eighteen long years, be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?"

17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were disappointed, and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

+ Today's Reading: The Wisdom Of Solomon 1:16-2:1a、10-24

1:16 But ungodly men by their hands and their words called ††† death to them:
Deeming him a friend they ‡‡‡ consumed away,
And they made a covenant with him,
Because they are worthy to be of his portion.

2:1a For they said * within themselves, reasoning not aright,
Short and sorrowful is our life;

2:10 Let us oppress the righteous poor;
Let us not spare the widow,
Nor reverence the hairs of the old man gray for length of years.

11 But let our strength be to us a law of righteousness;
For that which is weak is ‡‡‡ found to be of no service.

12 But let us lie in wait for the righteous man,
Because he is of disservice to us,
And is contrary to our works,
And upbraids us with sins against §§§ the law,
And lays to our charge sins against our discipline.

13 He professes to have knowledge of God,
And names himself * servant of the Lord.

14 He became to us a reproof of our thoughts.

15 He is grievous to us even to behold,
Because his life is unlike other men's,
And his paths are of strange fashion.

16 We were accounted of him as base metal,
And he abstains from our ways as from uncleannesses.
The latter end of the righteous he calls happy;
And he vaunts that God is his father.

17 Let us see if his words be true,
And let us try what shall befall in the ending of his life.

18 For if the righteous man is God's son, he will uphold him,
And he will deliver him out of the hand of his adversaries.

19 With outrage and torture let us put him to the test,
That we may learn his gentleness,
And may prove his patience under wrong.

20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death;
For † he shall be visited according to his words.

21 Thus reasoned they, and they were led astray;
For their ‡ wickedness blinded them,

22 And they knew not the mysteries of God,
Neither hoped they for wages of holiness,
Nor did they judge that there is a prize for blameless souls.

23 Because God created man for incorruption,
And made him an image of his own § proper being;

24 But by the envy of the devil death entered into the world,
And they that are of his portion make trial thereof.

†††1:16: Or, Hades Gr. him.

‡‡‡2:11: Gr. convicted.

§§§2:12: Or, law

*2:13: Or, child

†2:20: Gr. there shall be a visitation of him out of his words.

-----

+ First Reading: Jeremiah 31:7-9

7 For thus says Yahweh, Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout for the chief of the nations: publish, praise, and say, Yahweh, save your people, the remnant of Israel.

8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, along with the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her who travails with child together: a great company shall they return here.

9 They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

-----

+ Psalm: Psalms 126:1-6

1 When Yahweh brought back those who returned to Zion,
we were like those who dream.

2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with singing.
Then they said among the nations,
"Yahweh has done great things for them."

3 Yahweh has done great things for us,
and we are glad.

4 Restore our fortunes again, Yahweh,
like the streams in the Negev.

5 Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.

6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing,
will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves.

-----

+ Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-6

1 For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2 The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness.

3 Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself.

4 Nobody takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was.

5 So also Christ didn't glorify himself to be made a high priest, but it was he who said to him,
"You are my Son.
Today I have become your father."*Psalm 2:7

6 As he says also in another place,
"You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek."†Psalm 110:4

+ Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

46 They came to Jericho. As he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.

47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, "Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!"

48 Many rebuked him, that he should be quiet, but he cried out much more, "You son of David, have mercy on me!"

49 Jesus stood still, and said, "Call him."
They called the blind man, saying to him, "Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!"

50 He, casting away his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.

51 Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?"
The blind man said to him, "Rabboni,§Rabboni is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for "great teacher." that I may see again."

52 Jesus said to him, "Go your way. Your faith has made you well." Immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus on the way.

§10:51: Rabboni is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for "great teacher."

+ Today's Reading: The Wisdom Of Solomon 1:1-15

1 Love righteousness, you that be judges of the earth,
Think you of the Lord * with a good mind,
And in singleness of heart seek you? him;

2 Because he is found of them that tempt him not,
And is manifested to them that do not distrust him.

3 For crooked thoughts separate from God;
And the supreme Power, when it is brought to the proof, † puts to confusion the foolish:

4 Because wisdom will not enter into a soul that deviseth evil,
Nor dwell in a body that is held in pledge by sin.

5 For a holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit.
And will start away from thoughts that are without understanding,
And will be ‡ put to confusion when unrighteousness has come in.

6 For § wisdom is a spirit that loves man,
And she will not hold a ** blasphemer guiltless for his lips;
Because God bears witness of his reins,
And is a true overseer of his heart,
And a hearer of his tongue:

7 Because the spirit of the Lord has filled †† the world,
And that which holds all things together has knowledge of every voice.

8 Therefore no man that utters unrighteous things shall be unseen;
‡‡ Neither shall Justice, when it convicts, pass him by.

9 For in the midst of his counsels the ungodly shall be searched out;
And the sound of his words shall come to the Lord
To bring to conviction his lawless deeds:

10 Because there is an ear of jealousy that listens to all things,
And the noise of murmurings is not hid.

11 Beware then of unprofitable murmuring,
And refrain your tongue from backbiting;
Because no secret utterance shall go on its way void,
And a mouth that belies destroys a soul.

12 Court not death in the error of your life;
Neither draw upon yourselves destruction by the works of your hands:

13 Because God made not death;
Neither delights he when the living perish:

14 For he created all things that they might have being:
And§§ the generative powers of the world are healthsome,
And there is no poison of destruction in them:
Nor has Hades *** royal dominion upon earth,

15 For righteousness is immortal:

7 But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

8 Therefore he says, "When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men."*Psalm 68:18

9 Now this, "He ascended," what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds†or, pastors and teachers;

12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;

13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;

15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

according to an ordinance for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.

+ Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

1 Now there were some present at the same time who told him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

2 Jesus answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered such things?

3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.

4 Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that they were worse offenders than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?

5 I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way."

6 He spoke this parable. "A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none.

7 He said to the vine dresser, 'Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down. Why does it waste the soil?'

8 He answered, 'Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it, and fertilize it.

9 If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.'"

+ Psalm: Psalms 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6

1 The earth is Yahweh's, with its fullness;
the world, and those who dwell therein.

2 For he has founded it on the seas,
and established it on the floods.

3 Who may ascend to Yahweh's hill?
Who may stand in his holy place?

4ab He who has clean hands and a pure heart;
who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood,
(and has not sworn deceitfully.)

5 He shall receive a blessing from Yahweh,
righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 This is the generation of those who seek Him,
who seek your face—even Jacob.

+ Gospel: Luke 12:54-59

54 He said to the multitudes also, "When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it happens.

55 When a south wind blows, you say, 'There will be a scorching heat,' and it happens.

56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you don't interpret this time?

57 Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?

58 For when you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be released from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

59 I tell you, you will by no means get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny.§literally, lepton. 14 For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;

17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

19 and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

21 to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Praise is fitting for the upright.

Sing praises to him with the harp of ten strings.

4 For the word of Yahweh is right.
All his work is done in faithfulness.

5 He loves righteousness and justice.
The earth is full of the loving kindness of Yahweh.

11 The counsel of Yahweh stands fast forever,

18 Behold, Yahweh's eye is on those who fear him,

19 to deliver their soul from death,

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

51 Do you think that I have come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division.

52 For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

53 They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." ‡Micah 7:6

2 if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you;

3 how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,

4 by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ;

5 which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

6 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,

7 of which I was made a servant, according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.

8 To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

9 and to make all men see what is the administration*TR reads "fellowship" instead of "administration" of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ;

10 to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places,

11 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord;

12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.

1 In that day you will say, "I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me.

2 Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation."

3 Therefore with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation.

4 bcd"Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name. Declare his doings among the peoples. Proclaim that his name is exalted!

5 Sing to Yahweh, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth!

6 Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion; for the Holy One of Israel is great in the midst of you!"

+ Gospel: Luke 12:39-48

12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14 You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

16 He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.

17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord."

18 Zacharias said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years."

19 The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time."

21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

22 When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

23 It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

24 After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

25 "Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men."

26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

28 Having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!"

29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.

30 The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name 'Jesus.'

32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,

33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom."

34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?"

35 The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

36 Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

37 For everything spoken by God is possible."

38 Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word."
The angel departed from her.

39 Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,

40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

41 It happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

42 She called out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

43 Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!

45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!"

46 Mary said,
"My soul magnifies the Lord.

47 My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,

48 for he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid.
For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.

+ First Reading: Ephesians 2:12-22

12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,

15 having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;

16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.

18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,

20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;

21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;

22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

-----

+ Psalm: Psalms 85:8ab-13

8 I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, his saints;
(but let them not turn again to folly.)

9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth meet together.
Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11 Truth springs out of the earth.
Righteousness has looked down from heaven.

12 Yes, Yahweh will give that which is good.
Our land will yield its increase.

13 Righteousness goes before him,
And prepares the way for his steps.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them.

38 They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so.

+ First Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10

1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,

2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;

3 among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,

5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;

8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9 not of works, that no one would boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

-----

+ Psalm: Psalms 100:1-5

1 Shout for joy to Yahweh, all you lands!

2 Serve Yahweh with gladness.
Come before his presence with singing.

3 Know that Yahweh, he is God.
It is he who has made us, and we are his.
We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
into his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

5 For Yahweh is good.
His loving kindness endures forever,
his faithfulness to all generations.

+ Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

13 One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

14 But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"

15 He said to them, "Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses."

16 He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly.

17 He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?'

18 He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19 I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."'

20 "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared?whose will they be?'

21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

14 Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to him, saying, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask."

36 He said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"

37 They said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left hand, in your glory."

38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"

39 They said to him, "We are able."
Jesus said to them, "You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with;

40 but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared."

41 When the ten heard it, they began to be indignant towards James and John.

42 Jesus summoned them, and said to them, "You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

43 But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.

44 Whoever of you wants to become first among you, shall be bondservant of all.

+ First Reading: 2 Timothy 4:10-17a

10 for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.

12 But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander, the coppersmith, did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works,

15 of whom you also must beware; for he greatly opposed our words.

16 At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them.

17a But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear;

+ Psalm: Psalms 145:10-13, 17-18

10 All your works will give thanks to you, Yahweh.
Your saints will extol you.

11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and talk about your power;

12 to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts,
the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
Yahweh is faithful in all his words,
and loving in all his deeds.*

17 Yahweh is righteous in all his ways,
and gracious in all his works.

18 Yahweh is near to all those who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

+ Gospel: Luke 10:1-9

1 Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two ahead of him*literally, "before his face" into every city and place, where he was about to come.

2 Then he said to them, "The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may send out laborers into his harvest.

3 Go your ways. Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.

4 Carry no purse, nor wallet, nor sandals. Greet no one on the way.

5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.'

6 If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.

7 Remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Don't go from house to house.

8 Into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat the things that are set before you.

9 Heal the sick who are therein, and tell them, 'The Kingdom of God has come near to you.'

9:27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

28 He was with them entering into§TR and NU add "and going out" Jerusalem,

30 When the brothers‡‡The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings." knew it, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him off to Tarsus.

31 So the assemblies throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, and were built up. They were multiplied, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

11:19 They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews only.

20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists,†A Hellenist is someone who keeps Greek customs and culture. preaching the Lord Jesus.

21 The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

22 The report concerning them came to the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem. They sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch,

23 who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain near to the Lord.

24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord.

25 Barnabas went out to Tarsus to look for Saul.

26 When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. It happened, that for a whole year they were gathered together with the assembly, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness,

20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,

21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,†or, faithfulness

23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.

On his law he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water,

42 But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and the love of God. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces.

44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like hidden graves, and the men who walk over them don't know it."

45 One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you insult us also."

1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don't be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.

3 Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

4 You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.

22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the free woman.

23 However, the son by the handmaid was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise. 24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.

26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 For it is written,
"Rejoice, you barren who don't bear.
Break forth and shout, you that don't travail.
For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband." †Isaiah 54:1

31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the free woman.

29 When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.

30 For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.

31 The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, one greater than Solomon is here.

14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness,

12 For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

13 There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

+ Gospel:Mark 10:17-30

17 As he was going out into the way, one ran to him, knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"

18 Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except one?God.

19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder,' 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not give false testimony,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"‡Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20

20 He said to him, "Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth."

21 Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross."

22 But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.

23 Jesus looked around, and said to his disciples, "How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!"

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again, "Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."

26 They were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, "Then who can be saved?"

27 Jesus, looking at them, said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God."

28 Peter began to tell him, "Behold, we have left all, and have followed you."

29 Jesus said, "Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, 30 but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.

22 But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

7 Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham.

8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you all the nations will be blessed."*

9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who doesn't continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them."†

11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith."‡

12 The law is not of faith, but, "The man who does them will live by them."§

18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

19 But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore will they be your judges.

20 But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come to you.

21 "When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.

22 But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted, and divides his plunder.

23 "He that is not with me is against me. He who doesn't gather with me scatters.

24 The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest, and finding none, he says, 'I will turn back to my house from which I came out.'

25 When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order.

26 Then he goes, and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first."

1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth among you as crucified?

2 I just want to learn this from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?

8 I tell you, although he will not rise and give it to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence, he will get up and give him as many as he needs.

9 "I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you.

11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he won't give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?

12 Or if he asks for an egg, he won't give him a scorpion, will he?

13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
