+ First Reading: 1 Kings 18:41-46

41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.

43 He said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea."
He went up, and looked, and said, "There is nothing."
He said, "Go again" seven times.

44 It happened at the seventh time, that he said, "Behold, a small cloud, like a man's hand, is rising out of the sea."
He said, "Go up, tell Ahab, 'Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn't stop you.'"

45 It happened in a little while, that the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

46 The hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

+ Psalm: Psalms 65:9-12

9 You visit the earth, and water it.
You greatly enrich it.
The river of God is full of water.
You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it.

10 You drench its furrows.
You level its ridges.
You soften it with showers.
You bless it with a crop.

11 You crown the year with your bounty.
Your carts overflow with abundance.

12 The wilderness grasslands overflow.
The hills are clothed with gladness.

+ Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26

20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21 "You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;'††Exodus 20:13 and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'

22 But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause ‡‡NU omits "without a cause". shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca!§§"Raca" is an Aramaic insult, related to the word for "empty" and conveying the idea of empty-headedness.' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna. ***or, Hell

23 "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,

24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

26 Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.†††literally, kodrantes. A kodrantes was a small copper coin worth about 2 lepta (widow's mites)?not enough to buy very much of anything.

††5:21: Exodus 20:13

‡‡5:22: NU omits "without a cause".

§§5:22: "Raca" is an Aramaic insult, related to the word for "empty" and conveying the idea of empty-headedness.

***5:22: or, Hell

†††5:26: literally, kodrantes. A kodrantes was a small copper coin worth about 2 lepta (widow's mites)?not enough to buy very much of anything.

+ Today's Reading: Philippians 3:1-16

1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe.

2 Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision.

3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;

4 though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If any other man thinks that he has confidence in the flesh, I yet more:

5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;

6 concerning zeal, persecuting the assembly; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.

7 However, what things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ.

8 Yes most certainly, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them nothing but refuse, that I may gain Christ

9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

10 that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death;

11 if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

12 Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, if it is so that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

13 Brothers, I don't regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,

14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, think this way. If in anything you think otherwise, God will also reveal that to you.

16 Nevertheless, to the extent that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule. Let us be of the same mind.
