+ Saints: St. Nicodemus

-----

+ First Reading: Jeremiah 26:1-9

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this word from Yahweh, saying,

2 Yahweh says: Stand in the court of Yahweh's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Yahweh's house, all the words that I command you to speak to them; don't diminish a word.

3 It may be they will listen, and turn every man from his evil way; that I may repent me of the evil which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.

4 You shall tell them, Yahweh says: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,

5 to listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them, but you have not listened;

6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.

7 The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in Yahweh's house.

8 When Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, "You shall surely die."

9 Why have you prophesied in Yahweh's name, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant? All the people were gathered to Jeremiah in Yahweh's house.

+ Psalm: Psalms 69:4, 7-9, 13

4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head.
Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty.
I have to restore what I didn't take away.

7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach.
Shame has covered my face.

8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother's children.

9 For the zeal of your house consumes me.
The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time.
God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.

+ Gospel: Matthew 13:54-58

54 Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works?

55 Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?‡

56 Aren't all of his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all of these things?"

57 They were offended by him.
But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house."

58 He didn't do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

+ Today's Reading: Job 40:6-24、42:1-6

40:6 Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,

7 "Now brace yourself like a man.
I will question you, and you will answer me.

8 Will you even annul my judgment?
Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

9 Or do you have an arm like God?
Can you thunder with a voice like him?

10 "Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity.
Array yourself with honor and majesty.

11 Pour out the fury of your anger.
Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.

12 Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him.
Crush the wicked in their place.

13 Hide them in the dust together.
Bind their faces in the hidden place.

14 Then I will also admit to you
that your own right hand can save you.

15 "See now, behemoth, which I made as well as you.
He eats grass as an ox.

16 Look now, his strength is in his thighs.
His force is in the muscles of his belly.

17 He moves his tail like a cedar.
The sinews of his thighs are knit together.

18 His bones are like tubes of brass.
His limbs are like bars of iron.

19 He is the chief of the ways of God.
He who made him gives him his sword.

20 Surely the mountains produce food for him,
where all the animals of the field play.

21 He lies under the lotus trees,
in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.

22 The lotuses cover him with their shade.
The willows of the brook surround him.

23 Behold, if a river overflows, he doesn't tremble.
He is confident, though the Jordan swells even to his mouth.

24 Shall any take him when he is on the watch,
or pierce through his nose with a snare?

42:1 Then Job answered Yahweh,

2 "I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be restrained.

3 You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?'
therefore I have uttered that which I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I didn't know.

4 You said, 'Listen, now, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you will answer me.'

5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you.

6 Therefore I abhor myself,
and repent in dust and ashes."
