Gospel: Matthew 8:1-4
1 When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
2 Behold, a leper came to him and worshipped him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean."
3 Jesus stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I want to. Be made clean." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 Jesus said to him, "See that you tell nobody, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

Genesis 17:1, 9-10, 15-22
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty. Walk before me, and be blameless.
9 God said to Abraham, "As for you, you will keep my covenant, you and your offspring§ after you throughout their generations.
10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring** after you. Every male amongst you shall be circumcised.
15 God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah.
16 I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."
17 Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?"
18 Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!"
19 God said, "No, but Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall call his name Isaac.‡‡ I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his offspring§§ after him.
20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
21 But my covenant I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year."
22 When he finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19
13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
14 They said, "Some say John the Baptiser, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."
15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17 Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18 I also tell you that you are Peter,* and on this rock † I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades‡ will not prevail against it.
19 I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven."
*16:18: Peter's name, Petros in Greek, is the word for a specific rock or stone.
†16:18: Greek, petra, a rock mass or bedrock.
‡16:18: or, Hell
-----
Acts 12:1-11
1 Now about that time, King Herod stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly.
2 He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.
3 When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread.
4 When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.
5 Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.
6 The same night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Guards in front of the door kept the prison.
7 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side, and woke him up, saying, "Stand up quickly!" His chains fell off from his hands.
8 The angel said to him, "Get dressed and put on your sandals." He did so. He said to him, "Put on your cloak, and follow me."
9 And he went out and followed him. He didn't know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went out, and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
11 When Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting."
-----
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18
6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.
7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.
8 From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.
17 But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom; to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.
16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.

Genesis 15:1-12,17-18
1 After these things the LORD's word came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Don't be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."
2 Abram said, "Lord* the LORD, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
3 Abram said, "Behold, to me you have given no children†: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir."
4 Behold, the LORD's word came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir."
5 The LORD brought him outside, and said, "Look now towards the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." He said to Abram, "So will your offspring‡ be."
6 He believed in the LORD, who credited it to him for righteousness.
7 He said to Abram, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it."
8 He said, "Lord GOD, how will I know that I will inherit it?"
9 He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."
10 He brought him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other; but he didn't divide the birds.
11 The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
12 When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him.
17 It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "I have given this land to your offspring,** from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:

Genesis 13:2, 5-18
2 Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.
5 Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, herds, and tents.
6 The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together; for their substance was great, so that they could not live together.
7 There was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land at that time.
8 Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are relatives.
9 Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."
10 Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.
11 So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot travelled east, and they separated themselves the one from the other.
12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.
13 Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against the LORD.
14 The LORD said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,
15 for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever.
16 I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring* may also be counted.
17 Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its width; for I will give it to you."
18 Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD.

Gospel: Matthew 7:1-5
1 "Don't judge, so that you won't be judged.
2 For with whatever judgement you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?
4 Or how will you tell your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and behold, the beam is in your own eye?
5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.
-----
Genesis 12:1-9
1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you.
2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you."
4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother's son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. The Canaanites were in the land, then.
7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "I will give this land to your offspring." *
He built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
8 He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the LORD's name.
9 Abram travelled, still going on towards the South.

I hope you have a nice day today too.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
-----
Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33
26 Therefore don't be afraid of them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed; and hidden that will not be known.
27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in the ear, proclaim on the housetops.
28 Don't be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. §
29 "Aren't two sparrows sold for an assarion coin?** Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father's will,
30 but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.
32 Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven.
33 But whoever denies me before men, him I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.
§10:28: or, Hell.
**10:29: An assarion is a small coin worth one tenth of a drachma or a sixteenth of a denarius. An assarion is approximately the wages of one half hour of agricultural labour.
-----
Jeremiah 20:10-13
10 For I have heard the defaming of many,
"Terror on every side!
Denounce, and we will denounce him!"
say all my familiar friends,
those who watch for my fall.
"Perhaps he will be persuaded,
and we shall prevail against him,
and we shall take our revenge on him."
11 But the LORD is with me as an awesome mighty one.
Therefore my persecutors shall stumble,
and they shall not prevail.
They shall be utterly disappointed,
because they have not dealt wisely,
even with an everlasting dishonour which shall never be forgotten.
12 But, the LORD of Armies, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance on them;
for to you have I revealed my cause.
13 Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD;
for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
-----
Romans 5:12-15
12 Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.
13 For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren't like Adam's disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.
15 But the free gift isn't like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Mass during the Day
-----
Gospel: Luke 1:57-66, 80
57 Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son.
58 Her neighbours and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 His mother answered, "Not so; but he will be called John."
61 They said to her, "There is no one amongst your relatives who is called by this name."
62 They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
63 He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John."
They all marvelled.
64 His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
65 Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, "What then will this child be?" The hand of the Lord was with him.
80 The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
-----
Isaiah 49:1-6
1 Listen, islands, to me.
Listen, you peoples, from afar:
the LORD has called me from the womb;
from the inside of my mother he has mentioned my name.
2 He has made my mouth like a sharp sword.
He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand.
He has made me a polished shaft.
He has kept me close in his quiver.
3 He said to me, "You are my servant;
Israel, in whom I will be glorified."
4 But I said, "I have laboured in vain.
I have spent my strength in vain for nothing;
yet surely the justice due to me is with the LORD,
and my reward with my God."
5 Now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob again to him,
and to gather Israel to him,
for I am honourable in the LORD's eyes,
and my God has become my strength.
6 Indeed, he says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and to restore the preserved of Israel?
I will also give you as a light to the nations,
that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth."
-----
Acts 13:22-26
22 When he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, to whom he also testified, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all my will.'
23 From this man's offspring,† God has brought salvation‡ to Israel according to his promise,
24 before his coming, when John had first preached the baptism of repentance to Israel.§
25 As John was fulfilling his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. But behold, one comes after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'
26 Brothers, children of the stock of Abraham, and those amongst you who fear God, the word of this salvation is sent out to you.

Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
25 At that time, Jesus answered, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
26 Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.
28 "Come to me, all you who labour and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Deuteronomy 7:6-11
6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God. the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.
7 The LORD didn't set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples:
8 but because the LORD loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 Know therefore that the LORD your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations,
10 and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack to him who hates him. He will repay him to his face.
11 You shall therefore keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you today, to do them.

1 John 4:7-16
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God.
8 He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.
9 By this God's love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice* for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.
13 By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Saviour of the world.
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.
16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
*4:10: "atoning sacrifice" is from the Greek "ιλασμο?", an appeasing, propitiating, or the means of appeasement or propitiation?the sacrifice that turns away God's wrath because of our sin.

Gospel: Matthew 6:7-15
7 In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.
8 Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
9 Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
13 Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.'*

2 Corinthians 11:1-11
1 I wish that you would bear with me in a little foolishness, but indeed you do bear with me.
2 For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy. For I married you to one husband, that I might present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
3 But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness, so your minds might be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or if you receive a different spirit, which you did not receive, or a different "good news", which you did not accept, you put up with that well enough.
5 For I reckon that I am not at all behind the very best apostles.
6 But though I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not unskilled in knowledge. No, in every way we have been revealed to you in all things.
7 Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached to you God's Good News free of charge?
8 I robbed other assemblies, taking wages from them that I might serve you.
9 When I was present with you and was in need, I wasn't a burden on anyone, for the brothers, when they came from Macedonia, supplied the measure of my need. In everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and I will continue to do so.
10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no one will stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia. 11 Why? Because I don't love you? God knows.

Amen.'*

Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
1 "Be careful that you don't do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don't sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
3 But when you do merciful deeds, don't let your left hand know what your right hand does,
4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
5 "When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
16 "Moreover when you fast, don't be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;
18 so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11
6 Remember this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
7 Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.
9 As it is written,
"He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor.
His righteousness remains forever."☆
10 Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;
11 you being enriched in everything to all liberality, which produces through us thanksgiving to God.

Gospel: Matthew 5:43-48
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour ‡‡‡ and hate your enemy.'§§§
44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?
47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors* do the same?
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

2 Corinthians 8:1-9
1 Moreover, brothers, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia;
2 how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality.
3 For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord,
4 begging us with much entreaty to receive this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints.
5 This was not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God. 6 So we urged Titus, that as he had made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace.
7 But as you abound in everything, in faith, utterance, knowledge, all earnestness, and in your love to us, see that you also abound in this grace.
8 I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.

Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ
-----
Gospel: John 6:51-58
51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
52 The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
53 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don't have life in yourselves.
54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he who feeds on me, he will also live because of me.
58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven?not as our fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread will live forever."
-----
Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a
2 You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.
3 He humbled you, and allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna, which you didn't know, neither did your fathers know; that he might teach you that man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the LORD's mouth.
14b and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with venomous snakes and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was no water; who poured water for you out of the rock of flint;
16a who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers didn't know;
-----
1 Corinthians 10:16-17
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn't it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn't it a sharing of the body of Christ?
17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

14b and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;
15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with venomous snakes and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was no water; who poured water for you out of the rock of flint;
16a who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers didn't know;
-----
1 Corinthians 10:16-17
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn't it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn't it a sharing of the body of Christ?
17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

Gospel: Matthew 5:33-37
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,'
34 but I tell you, don't swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can't make one hair white or black.
37 But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No' be 'No.' Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.
-----
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
14 For the love of Christ constrains us; because we judge thus, that one died for all, therefore all died.
15 He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again.
16 Therefore we know no one after the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know him so no more.
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold,* all things have become new.
18 But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20 We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
21 For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
*5:17: "Behold", from "?δο?", means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

31 "It was also said, 'Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,'☆

8 We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair;
9 pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;
10 always carrying in the body the putting to death of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh.

Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;'☆ and 'Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgement.'
22 But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause § will be in danger of the judgement; and whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' ** will be in danger of the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna. ††
23 "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.
26 Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.‡‡
☆5:21: Exodus 20:13
§5:22: NU omits "without a cause".
**5:22: "Raca" is an Aramaic insult, related to the word for "empty" and conveying the idea of empty-headedness.
††5:22: or, Hell
‡‡5:26: literally, kodrantes. A kodrantes was a small copper coin worth about 2 lepta (widow's mites)--not enough to buy very much of anything.

2 Corinthians 3:15--4:1, 3-6
3:15 But to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart.
16 But whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.
4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we don't faint.
3 Even if our Good News is veiled, it is veiled in those who perish;
4 in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.
5 For we don't preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake;
6 seeing it is God who said, "Light will shine out of darkness,"☆ who has shone in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

4 Such confidence we have through Christ towards God;
5 not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God;
6 who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 But if the service of death, written engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly on the face of Moses for the glory of his face; which was passing away:
8 won't service of the Spirit be with much more glory?
9 For if the service of condemnation has glory, the service of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.
10 For most certainly that which has been made glorious has not been made glorious in this respect, by reason of the glory that surpasses.
11 For if that which passes away was with glory, much more that which remains is in glory.

Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16
13 "You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavour, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden.
15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.
16 Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
-----
2 Corinthians 1:18-22
18 But as God is faithful, our word towards you was not "Yes and no."
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached amongst you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not "Yes and no," but in him is "Yes."
20 For however many are the promises of God, in him is the "Yes." Therefore also through him is the "Amen", to the glory of God through us.
21 Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;
22 who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

21 Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;
22 who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12
1 Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
2 He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.☆
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.☆
5 Blessed are the gentle,
for they shall inherit the earth.*☆
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

2 Corinthians 1:1-7
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the assembly of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia:
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;
4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ.
6 But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.
7 Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.

Gospel: John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
17 For God didn't send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn't believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9
4b Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up to Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two stone tablets.
5 The LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the LORD's name.
6 The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, "The LORD! the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,
8 Moses hurried and bowed his head towards the earth, and worshipped.
9 He said, "If now I have found favour in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go amongst us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance."

Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
38 In his teaching he said to them, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,
39 and the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts:
40 those who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
41 Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.
42 A poor widow came, and she cast in two small brass coins,* which equal a quadrans coin.†
43 He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,
44 for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on."
*12:42: literally, lepta (or widow's mites). Lepta are very small brass coins worth half a quadrans each, which is a quarter of the copper assarion. Lepta are worth less than 1% of an agricultural worker's daily wages.
†12:42: A quadrans is a coin worth about 1/64 of a denarius. A denarius is about one day's wages for an agricultural labourer.
-----
Tobit 12:1, 5-15, 20
1 And Tobit called his son Tobias, and said to him, See, my child, that the man which went with you have his wages, and you must give him more.
5 And he called the angel, and said to him, Take the half of all that you^ have brought.
6 Then he called them both privily, and said to them,
Bless God, and give him thanks, and magnify him, and give him thanks in the sight of all that live, for the things which he has done with you. It is good to bless God and exalt his name, showing forth with honour the works of God; and be not slack to give him thanks.
7 It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God. Do good, and evil shall not find you.
8 Good is prayer with fasting and alms and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold:
9 alms does deliver from death, and it shall purge away all sin. They that do alms and righteousness shall be filled with life;
10 but they that sin are enemies to their own life.
11 Surely I will keep close nothing from you. I have said, It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but to reveal gloriously the works of God.
12 And now, when you did pray, and Sarah your daughter in law, I did bring the memorial of your prayer before the Holy One: and when you did bury the dead, I was with you likewise.
13 And when you did not delay to rise up, and leave your dinner, that you might go and cover the dead, your good deed was not hid from me: but I was with you.
14 And now God did send me to heal you and Sarah your daughter in law.
15 I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saints, and go in before the glory of the Holy One.
20 And now give God thanks: because I ascend to him that sent me: and write in a book all the things which have been done.

Tobit 11:5-17
5 And Anna sat looking about towards the way for her son.
6 And she espied him coming, and said to his father, Behold, your son comes, and the man that went with him.
7 And Raphael said, I know, Tobias, that your father will open his eyes.
8 Do you therefore anoint his eyes with the gall, and being pricked therewith, he shall rub, and shall make the white films to fall away, and he shall see you.
9 And Anna ran to him, and fell upon the neck of her son, and said to him, I have seen you, my child; from henceforth I will die. And they wept both.
10 And Tobit went forth towards the door, and stumbled: but his son ran to him,
11 and took hold of his father: and he struck the gall on his father's eyes, saying, Be of good cheer, my father.
12 But when his eyes began to hurt, he rubbed them;
13 and the white films scaled away from the corners of his eyes; and he saw his son, and fell upon his neck.
14 And he wept, and said, Blessed are you, O God, and blessed is your name for ever, and blessed are all your holy angels;
15 for you did scourge, and did have mercy on me: behold, I see my son Tobias. And his son went in rejoicing, and told his father the great things that had happened to him in Media.
16 And Tobit went out to meet his daughter in law at the gate of Nineveh, rejoicing, and blessing God: and they which saw him go marvelled, because he had received his sight.
17 And Tobit gave thanks before them, because God had showed mercy on him. And when Tobit came near to Sarah his daughter in law, he blessed her, saying, Welcome, daughter: blessed is God which has brought you to us, and blessed are your father and your mother. And there was joy to all his brethren which were at Nineveh.

Gospel: Mark 12:28b-34
28b One of the scribes came,
asked him, "Which commandment is the greatest of all?"
29 Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:
30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'☆ This is the first commandment.
31 The second is like this, 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.'☆ There is no other commandment greater than these."
32 The scribe said to him, "Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one, and there is none other but he,
33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from God's Kingdom."
No one dared ask him any question after that.

Tobit 6:9-10; 7:1, 9-17; 8:4-8*
6:9 But when they drew near to Rages,
6:10 the angel said to the young man, Brother, today we shall lodge with Raguel, and he is your kinsman; and he has an only daughter, named Sarah. I will speak for her, that she should be given you for a wife.
7:1 And they came to Ecbatana, and arrived at the house of Raguel. But Sarah met them; and she saluted them, and they her; and she brought them into the house.
9 And he communicated the thing to Raguel: and Raguel said to Tobias, Eat and drink, and make merry:
10 for it appertains to you to take my child. Howbeit I will show you the truth.
11 I have given my child to seven men, and whenever they came in to her, they died in the night. But for the present be merry. And Tobias said, I will taste nothing here, until you? make covenant and enter into covenant with me.
12 And Raguel said, Take her to yourself from henceforth according to the manner: you are her brother, and she is your: but the merciful God shall give all good success to you.
13 And he called his daughter Sarah, and took her by the hand, and gave her to be wife to Tobias, and said, Behold, take her to yourself after the law of Moses, and lead her away to your father. And he blessed them;
14 And he called Edna his wife, and took a book, and wrote an instrument, and sealed it.
15 And they began to eat.
16 And Raguel called his wife Edna, and said to her, Sister, prepare the other chamber, and bring her in there.
17 And she did as he bade her, and brought her in there: and she wept, and she received the tears of her daughter, and said to her,
8:4 But after they were both shut in together, Tobias rose up from the bed, and said, Sister, arise, and let us pray that the Lord may have mercy on us.
5 And Tobias began to say, Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name for ever; let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures.
6 You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and a stay: of them came the seed of men: you did say, it is not good that the man should be alone; let us make him a helper like to him.
7 And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust, but in truth: command that I may find mercy and grow old with her.
8 And she said with him, Amen. And they slept both that night.

Gospel: Mark 12:18-27
18 There came to him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection. They asked him, saying,
19 "Teacher, Moses wrote to us, 'If a man's brother dies, and leaves a wife behind him, and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.'
20 There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no offspring.
21 The second took her, and died, leaving no children behind him. The third likewise;
22 and the seven took her and left no children. Last of all the woman also died.
23 In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife."
24 Jesus answered them, "Isn't this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God?
25 For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
26 But about the dead, that they are raised; haven't you read in the book of Moses, about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?☆
27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are therefore badly mistaken."
☆12:26: Exodus 3:6

Tobit 3:1-11a, 16-17a
1 And I was grieved and wept, and prayed in sorrow, saying,
2 O Lord, you are righteous, and all your works and all your ways are mercy and truth, and you judge true and righteous judgement for ever.
3 Remember me, and look on me; take not vengeance on me for my sins and mine ignorances, and the sins of my fathers, which sinned before you:
4 for they disobeyed your commandments; and you gave us for a spoil, and for captivity, and for death, and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations amongst whom we are dispersed.
5 And now many are your judgements, true are they; that you should deal with me according to my sins and the sins of my fathers: because we did not keep your commandments, for we walked not in truth before you.
6 And now deal with me according to that which is pleasing in your sight, command my spirit to be taken from me, that I may be released, and become earth: for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and there is much sorrow in me: command that I be now released from my distress, and go to the everlasting place: turn not your face away from me.
7 The same day it happened to Sarah the daughter of Raguel in Ecbatana of Media, that she also was reproached by her father's maidservants;
8 because that she had been given to seven husbands, and Asmodaeus the evil * spirit killed them, before they had lain with her. And they said to her, Do you not know that you strangle your husbands? you have had already seven husbands, and you have had no profit of any one of them.
9 Wherefore do you scourge us? if they be dead, go your ways with them; let us never see of you either son or daughter.
10 When she heard these things, she was grieved exceedingly, so that she thought to have hanged herself: and she said, I am the only daughter of my father; if I do this, it shall be a reproach to him, and I shall bring down his old age with sorrow to † the grave.
11a And she prayed by the window,
16 And the prayer of both was heard before the glory of the great God.
17a Raphael also was sent to heal them both,

Gospel: Mark 12:13-17
13 They sent some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.
14 When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
15 Shall we give, or shall we not give?"
But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it."
16 They brought it.
He said to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?"
They said to him, "Caesar's."
17 Jesus answered them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
They marvelled greatly at him.
-----
Tobit 2:9-14
9 And the same night I returned from burying him, and slept by the wall of my courtyard, being polluted; and my face was uncovered:
10 and I knew not that there were sparrows in the wall; and, mine eyes being open, the sparrows muted warm dung into mine eyes, and white films came in mine eyes; and I went to the physicians, and they helped me not: but Achiacharus did nourish me, * until I went into Elymais.
11 And my wife Anna did spin in the women's chambers,
12 and did send the work back to the owners. And they on their part paid her wages, and gave her also besides a kid.
13 But when it came to my house, it began to cry, and I said to her, From whence is this kid? is it stolen? render it to the owners; for it is not lawful to eat anything that is stolen.
14 But she said, It has been given me for a gift more than the wages. And I did not believe her, and I bade her render it to the owners; and I was abashed at her. But she answered and said to me, Where are your alms and your righteous deeds? behold, † you and all your works are known.
