Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church
-----
Gospel : Luke 9:51-56
51
It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem
52
and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.
53
They didn't receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.
54
When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?"
55
But he turned and rebuked them, "You don't know of what kind of spirit you are.
56
For the Son of Man didn't come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."
They went to another village.

Zechariah 8:20-23
20
The LORD of Armies says: "Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come.
21 The inhabitants of one will go to another, saying, 'Let's go speedily to entreat the favor of the LORD, and to seek the LORD of Armies. I will go also.'
22 Yes, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of Armies in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the LORD."
23 The LORD of Armies says: "In those days, ten men out of all the languages of the nations will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, 'We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.' "

Gospel : John 1:47-51
47
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"
48
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
49
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!"
50
Jesus answered him, "Because I told you, 'I saw you underneath the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these!"
51
He said to him, "Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
-----
Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
9
"I watched until thrones were placed,
and one who was Ancient of Days sat.
His clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool.
His throne was fiery flames,
and its wheels burning fire.
10
A fiery stream issued and came out from before him.
Thousands of thousands ministered to him.
Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The judgment was set.
The books were opened.
13
"I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him.
14
Dominion was given him, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which will not pass away, and his kingdom one that will not be destroyed.

Revelation 12:7-12ab
7
There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war.
8
They didn't prevail. No place was found for them any more in heaven.
9
The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10
I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ has come; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.
11
They overcame him because of the Lamb's blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn't love their life, even to death.
12ab
Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them.

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel : Luke 16:19-31
19
"Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.
20
A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was taken to his gate, full of sores,
21
and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22
The beggar died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23
In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.
24
He cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.'
25
"But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But here he is now comforted and you are in anguish.
26
Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that no one may cross over from there to us.'
27
"He said, 'I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house?
28
for I have five brothers?that he may testify to them, so they won't also come into this place of torment.'
29
"But Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.'
30
"He said, 'No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
31
"He said to him, 'If they don't listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.' "

13
I command you before God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession,

1
I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand.
2 Then I asked, "Where are you going?"
He said to me, "To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length."
3 Behold, the angel who talked with me went out, and another angel went out to meet him,
4 and said to him, "Run, speak to this young man, saying, 'Jerusalem will be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it.
5 For I,' says the LORD, 'will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.
10
Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion! For behold, I come and I will dwell within you,' says the LORD.

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the LORD's word came by Haggai the prophet, to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
2
"This is what the LORD of Armies says: These people say, 'The time hasn't yet come, the time for the LORD's house to be built.' "
3
Then the LORD's word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
4
"Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste?
5
Now therefore this is what the LORD of Armies says: 'Consider your ways.
6
You have sown much, and bring in little. You eat, but you don't have enough. You drink, but you aren't filled with drink. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it.'
7
"This is what the LORD of Armies says: 'Consider your ways.
8
Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house. I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," says the LORD.

Gospel : Luke 9:1-6
1
He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2
He sent them out to preach God's Kingdom and to heal the sick.
3
He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey?no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don't have two tunics each.
4
Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.
5
As many as don't receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them."
6
They departed and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.
-----
Ezra 9:5-9
5
At the evening offering I rose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to the LORD my God;
6
and I said, "My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.
7
Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
8
Now for a little moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a stake in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and revive us a little in our bondage.
9
For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to revive us, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

Gospel : Luke 8:19-21
19
His mother and brothers came to him, and they could not come near him for the crowd.
20
Some people told him, "Your mother and your brothers stand outside, desiring to see you."
21
But he answered them, "My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it."

Ezra 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20
7
Leave the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.
8
Moreover I make a decree regarding what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king's goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses must be given with all diligence to these men, that they not be hindered.
12b
I Darius have made a decree. Let it be done with all diligence.
14
The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
15
This house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.
16
The children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy.
17
They offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
18
They set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God which is at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.
19
The children of the captivity kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.
20
Because the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together, all of them were pure. They killed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, for their brothers the priests, and for themselves.

17
For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.

Ezra 1:1-6
1
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the LORD's word by Jeremiah's mouth might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
2
"Cyrus king of Persia says, 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3
Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel (he is God), which is in Jerusalem.
4
Whoever is left, in any place where he lives, let the men of his place help him with silver, with gold, with goods, and with animals, in addition to the free will offering for God's house which is in Jerusalem.' "
5
Then the heads of fathers' households of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and the Levites, all whose spirit God had stirred to go up, rose up to build the LORD's house which is in Jerusalem.
6
All those who were around them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with animals, and with precious things, in addition to all that was willingly offered.

Gospel : Luke 16:1-13
1
He also said to his disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a manager. An accusation was made to him that this man was wasting his possessions.
2
He called him, and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.'
3
"The manager said within himself, 'What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don't have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.
4
I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from management, they may receive me into their houses.'
5
Calling each one of his lord's debtors to him, he said to the first, 'How much do you owe to my lord?'
6
He said, 'A hundred batos of oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'
7
Then he said to another, 'How much do you owe?' He said, 'A hundred cors of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.'
8
"His lord commended the dishonest manager because he had done wisely, for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.
9
I tell you, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents.
10
He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.
11
If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
12
If you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?
13
No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to one and despise the other. You aren't able to serve God and Mammon."

who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time,
7
to which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle?I am telling the truth in Christ, not lying?a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Gospel : Luke 8:4-15
4
When a great multitude came together and people from every city were coming to him, he spoke by a parable:
5
"The farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the road, and it was trampled under foot, and the birds of the sky devoured it.
6
Other seed fell on the rock, and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture.
7
Other fell amid the thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it.
8
Other fell into the good ground and grew and produced one hundred times as much fruit." As he said these things, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"
9
Then his disciples asked him, "What does this parable mean?"
10
He said, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of God's Kingdom, but to the rest it is given in parables, that 'seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.'
11
"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12
Those along the road are those who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.
13
Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root. They believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation.
14
What fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life; and they bring no fruit to maturity.
15
Those in the good ground, these are those who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produce fruit with perseverance.

Gospel : Luke 8:1-3
1
Soon afterwards, he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of God's Kingdom. With him were the twelve,
2
and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out;
3
and Joanna, the wife of Chuzas, Herod's steward; Susanna; and many others who served them from their possessions.
-----
1 Timothy 6:2c-12
2c
Teach and exhort these things.
3
If anyone teaches a different doctrine and doesn't consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness,
4
he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions,
5
constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.
6
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7
For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can't carry anything out.
8
But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.
9
But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction.
10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11
But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
12
Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.

Gospel : Luke 7:36-50
36
One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered into the Pharisee's house and sat at the table.
37
Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment.
38
Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39
Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner."
40
Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you."
He said, "Teacher, say on."
41
"A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42
When they couldn't pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?"
43
Simon answered, "He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most."
He said to him, "You have judged correctly."
44
Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head.
45
You gave me no kiss, but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss my feet.
46
You didn't anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.
47
Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But one to whom little is forgiven, loves little."
48
He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
49
Those who sat at the table with him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"
50
He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
-----
1 Timothy 4:12-16
12
Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.
13
Until I come, pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching.
14
Don't neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the elders.
15
Be diligent in these things. Give yourself wholly to them, that your progress may be revealed to all.
16
Pay attention to yourself and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Gospel : Luke 7:31-35
31
"To what then should I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?
32
They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, saying, 'We piped to you, and you didn't dance. We mourned, and you didn't weep.'
33
For John the Baptizer came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'
34
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
35
Wisdom is justified by all her children."
-----
1 Timothy 3:14-16
14
These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly,
15
but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God's house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16
Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great:
God was revealed in the flesh,
justified in the spirit,
seen by angels,
preached among the nations,
believed on in the world,
and received up in glory.

Gospel : Luke 7:11-17
11
Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him.
12
Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, one who was dead was carried out, the only born son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people of the city were with her.
13
When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Don't cry."
14
He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!"
15
He who was dead sat up and began to speak. Then he gave him to his mother.
16
Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and, "God has visited his people!"
17
This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region.

1 Timothy 3:1-13
1
This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer desires a good work.
2
The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching;
3
not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4
one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence;
5
(for how could someone who doesn't know how to rule his own house take care of God's assembly?)
6
not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7
Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8
Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money,
9
holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10
Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless.
11
Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, and faithful in all things.
12
Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13
For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15
that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born§ Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

4b
The soul of the people was very discouraged because of the journey.
5
The people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!"
6
The LORD sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel died.
7
The people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." Moses prayed for the people.
8
The LORD said to Moses, "Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole. It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live."
9
Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole. If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.

Philippians 2:6-11
6
who, existing in the form of God, didn't consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7
but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8
And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.
9
Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name,
10
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
11
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

-----
Gospel : Luke 6:43-49
43
"For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.
44
For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don't gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
45
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.
46
"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things which I say?
47
Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words and does them, I will show you who he is like.
48
He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock.
49
But he who hears and doesn't do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."
-----
1 Timothy 1:15-17
15
The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
16
However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.
17
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?

Or how can you tell your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,' when you yourself don't see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! Gospel : Luke 6:27-38
27
"But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28
bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.
29
To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don't withhold your coat also.
30
Give to everyone who asks you, and don't ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again.
31
"As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.
32
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
33
If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
34
If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much.
35
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.
36
"Therefore be merciful,
even as your Father is also merciful.
37
Don't judge,
and you won't be judged.
Don't condemn,
and you won't be condemned.
Set free,
and you will be set free.
38
"Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you."

Colossians 3:12-17
12
Put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
13
bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
14
Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.
16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.
17
Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Gospel : Luke 6:20-26
20
He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for God's Kingdom is yours.
21
Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22
Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake.
23
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets.
24
"But woe to you who are rich!
For you have received your consolation.
25
Woe to you, you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26
Woe, when men speak well of you,
for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.

Colossians 3:1-11
1
If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.
2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.
3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.
5 Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
6 For these things' sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.
7 You also once walked in those, when you lived in them,
8 but now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth.
9 Don't lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings,
10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator,
11 where there can't be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, or free person; but Christ is all, and in all.

When it was day, he called his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles:

15
Matthew; Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus; Simon who was called the Zealot;
16

17
He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a crowd of his disciples and a great number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases,

6
As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him,

8
Be careful that you don't let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elemental spirits of the world, and not after Christ.
9
For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily,
10
and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power.
11
In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ,
12
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13
You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
14
wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us. He has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross. 15 Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21
She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
22
Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

They shall call his name Immanuel,"
which is, being interpreted, "God with us."

19
Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.

Gospel : Luke 14:25-33
25
Now great multitudes were going with him. He turned and said to them,
26
"If anyone comes to me, and doesn't disregard his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can't be my disciple.
27
Whoever doesn't bear his own cross and come after me, can't be my disciple.
28
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
29
Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation and isn't able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him,
30
saying, 'This man began to build and wasn't able to finish.'
31
Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
32
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy and asks for conditions of peace.
33
So therefore, whoever of you who doesn't renounce all that he has, he can't be my disciple.

Wisdom 9:13-18b
13
For who knows God's counsel,
or who can conceive what the Lord intends?
14
For the deliberations of mortals are timid,
and uncertain our plans.
15
For the corruptible body burdens the soul
and the earthly tent weighs down the mind with its many concerns.
16
Scarcely can we guess the things on earth,
and only with difficulty grasp what is at hand;
but things in heaven, who can search them out?
17
Or who can know your counsel, unless you give Wisdom
and send your holy spirit from on high?
18
Thus were the paths of those on earth made straight,
and people learned what pleases you,
and were saved by Wisdom.

yet for love's sake I rather appeal to you, being such a one as Paul, the aged, but also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
10
I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whom I have become the father of in my chains,
12
I am sending him back. Therefore receive him, that is, my own heart,
13
whom I desired to keep with me, that on your behalf he might serve me in my chains for the Good News.
14
But I was willing to do nothing without your consent, that your goodness would not be as of necessity, but of free will.
15
For perhaps he was therefore separated from you for a while that you would have him forever,
16
no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother--especially to me, but how much rather to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
17
If then you count me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.

2
But some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why do you do that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath day?"
3
Jesus, answering them, said, "Haven't you read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
4
how he entered into God's house, and took and ate the show bread, and gave also to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?"

Gospel : Luke 5:1-11
1
Now while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.
2
He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3
He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."
5
Simon answered him, "Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net."
6
When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking.
7
They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
8
But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord."
9
For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught;
10
and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.
Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive."
11
When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.

Gospel : Luke 4:38-44
38
He rose up from the synagogue and entered into Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him to help her.
39
He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them.
40
When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41
Demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Rebuking them, he didn't allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42
When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn't go away from them.
43
But he said to them, "I must preach the good news of God's Kingdom to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent."
44
He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

We give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
4
having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which you have toward all the saints,
5
because of the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the Good News
6
which has come to you, even as it is in all the world and is bearing fruit and growing, as it does in you also, since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth,
7
even as you learned from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on your behalf,
8
who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

-----
Gospel : Luke 4:31-37
31
He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day,
32
and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.
33
In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice,
34
saying, "Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!"
35
Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent and come out of him!" When the demon had thrown him down in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
36
Amazement came on all and they spoke together, one with another, saying, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"
37
News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11
1
But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.
2
For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.
3
For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape.
4
But you, brothers, aren't in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.
5
You are all children of light and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness,
6
so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober.
9
For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
10
who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11
Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

Gospel : Luke 4:16-30
16
He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17
The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,
18
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to heal the broken hearted,†
to proclaim release to the captives,
recovering of sight to the blind,
to deliver those who are crushed,
19
and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
20
He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21
He began to tell them, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
22
All testified about him and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
23
He said to them, "Doubtless you will tell me this proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.' "
24
He said, "Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
25
But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.
26
Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
27
There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian."
28
They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue as they heard these things.
29
They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.
30
But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way.
-----
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13
But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
14
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
15
For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep.
16
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God's trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,
17
then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.
18
Therefore comfort one another with these words.
