+ Saints: St. Lucy

+ First Reading: Isaiah 41:13-20

13 For I, Yahweh your God, will hold your right hand,
saying to you, 'Don't be afraid.
I will help you.'

14 Don't be afraid, you worm Jacob,
and you men of Israel.
I will help you," says Yahweh,
"and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

15 Behold, I have made you into a new sharp threshing instrument with teeth.
You will thresh the mountains,
and beat them small,
and will make the hills like chaff.

16 You will winnow them,
and the wind will carry them away,
and the whirlwind will scatter them.
You will rejoice in Yahweh.
You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

17 The poor and needy seek water, and there is none.
Their tongue fails for thirst.
I, Yahweh, will answer them.
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

18 I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and springs in the middle of the valleys.
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water.

19 I will put cedar, acacia, myrtle, and oil trees in the wilderness.
I will set cypress trees, pine, and box trees together in the desert;

20 that they may see, know, consider, and understand together,
that Yahweh's hand has done this,
and the Holy One of Israel has created it.

+ Psalm: Psalms 145:1 and 9, 10-11, 12-13ab

1 I will exalt you, my God, the King.
I will praise your name forever and ever.

9 Yahweh is good to all.
His tender mercies are over all his works.

10 All your works will give thanks to you, Yahweh.
Your saints will extol you.

11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and talk about your power;

12 to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts,
the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.

13ab Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

+ Gospel: Matthew 11:11-15

11 Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

12 From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.*or, plunder it.

13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

14 If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.

15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

+ Today's Reading: Ruth 2:1-13

1 Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.

2 Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I find favor."
She said to her, "Go, my daughter."

3 She went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

4 Behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, "May Yahweh be with you."
They answered him, "May Yahweh bless you."

5 Then Boaz said to his servant who was set over the reapers, "Whose young lady is this?"

6 The servant who was set over the reapers answered, "It is the Moabite lady who came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab.

7 She said, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came, and has continued even from the morning until now, except that she rested a little in the house."

8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, "Listen, my daughter. Don't go to glean in another field, and don't go from here, but stay here close to my maidens.

9 Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them. Haven't I commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn."

10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said to him, "Why have I found favor in your sight, that you should take knowledge of me, since I am a foreigner?"

11 Boaz answered her, "I have been fully told about all that you have done to your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn't know before.

12 May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."

13 Then she said, "Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, because you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not as one of your servants."
