Gospel: Matthew 7:15-20
15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.
16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.
18 A good tree can't produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.
19 Every tree that doesn't grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.
20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18
1 After these things the LORD's word came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Don't be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."
2 Abram said, "Lord*The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai". the LORD, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
3 Abram said, "Behold, to me you have given no children†or, seed: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir."
4 Behold, the LORD's word came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir."
5 The LORD brought him outside, and said, "Look now towards the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." He said to Abram, "So will your offspring‡or, seed be."
6 He believed in the LORD, who credited it to him for righteousness.
7 He said to Abram, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it."
8 He said, "Lord GOD, how will I know that I will inherit it?"
9 He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."
10 He brought him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other; but he didn't divide the birds.
11 The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
12 When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him.
17 It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "I have given this land to your offspring,**or, seed from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:

* 1 Samuel 1:20-28, 2:11-21
1:20 When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel,‡Samuel sounds like the Hebrew for "heard by God." saying, "Because I have asked him of the LORD."
21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
22 But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and stay there forever."
23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may the LORD establish his word."
So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.
24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah§1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the LORD's house in Shiloh. The child was young.
25 They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
26 She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.
27 I prayed for this child; and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.
28 Therefore I have also given him to the LORD. As long as he lives he is given to the LORD." He worshipped the LORD there.
2:11 Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served the LORD before Eli the priest.
12 Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn't know the LORD.
13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;
14 and he stabbed it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot. The priest took all that the fork brought up for himself. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
15 Yes, before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, "Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw."
16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burnt first, and then take as much as your soul desires"; then he would say, "No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force."
17 The sin of the young men was very great before the LORD; for the men despised the offering of the LORD.
18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
19 Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
20 Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, "May The LORD give you offspring†or, seed from this woman for the petition which was asked of the LORD." Then they went to their own home.
21 The LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before the LORD.
‡1:20: Samuel sounds like the Hebrew for "heard by God."
§1:24: 1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel
†2:20: or, seed
