Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

25 Behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?"

27 He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind;? and your neighbour as yourself."☆

28 He said to him, "You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live."

29 But he, desiring to justify himself, asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbour?"

30 Jesus answered, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell amongst robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion,

34 came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.'

36 Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbour to him who fell amongst the robbers?"

37 He said, "He who showed mercy on him."
Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Deuteronomy 30:10-14

10 if you will obey the LORD your God's voice, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law; if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul.

11 For this commandment which I command you today is not too hard for you or too distant.

12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, "Who will go up for us to heaven, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?"

13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, "Who will go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?"

14 But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Colossians 1:15-20

15 Yes, we are also found false witnesses of God, because we testified about God that he raised up Christ, whom he didn't raise up, if it is so that the dead are not raised.

16 For if the dead aren't raised, neither has Christ been raised.

17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins.

18 Then they also who are fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

19 If we have only hoped in Christ in this life, we are of all men most pitiable.

20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep.

* 1 Samuel 31:1-4, 2 Samuel 1:1-16

* 1 Samuel 31:1-4

31:1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.

2 The Philistines overtook Saul and on his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

3 The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers.

4 Then Saul said to his armour bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me!" But his armour bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it.

* 2 Samuel 1:1-16

1:1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag;

2 on the third day, behold,* a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn, and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth, and showed respect.

3 David said to him, "Where do you come from?"
He said to him, "I have escaped out of the camp of Israel."

4 David said to him, "How did it go? Please tell me."
He answered, "The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also."

5 David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?"

6 The young man who told him said, "As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him.

7 When he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. I answered, 'Here I am.'

8 He said to me, 'Who are you?' I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.'

9 He said to me, 'Please stand beside me, and kill me; for anguish has taken hold of me, because my life lingers in me.'

10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord."

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD,† and for the house of Israel; because they had fallen by the sword.

13 David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?"
He answered, "I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite."

14 David said to him, "Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?"

15 David called one of the young men, and said, "Go near, and cut him down!" He struck him so that he died.

16 David said to him, "Your blood be on your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have slain the LORD's anointed.'"

* 2 Samuel 1:2: "Behold", from "??????", means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

†2 Samuel 1:12: When rendered in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, "LORD" or "GOD" is the translation of God's Proper Name.
