Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21

15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.

16 They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach, for you aren't partial to anyone.

17 Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?

19 Show me the tax money."
They brought to him a denarius.

20 He asked them, "Whose is this image and inscription?"

21 They said to him, "Caesar's."
Then he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Isaiah 45:1, 4-6

1 the LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armour; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut:

4 For Jacob my servant's sake,
and Israel my chosen,
I have called you by your name.
I have given you a title,
though you have not known me.

5 I am the LORD, and there is no one else.
Besides me, there is no God.
I will strengthen* you,
though you have not known me;

6 that they may know from the rising of the sun,
and from the west,
that there is no one besides me.
I am the LORD, and there is no one else.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b

1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 We always give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers,

3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labour of love and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.

4 We know, brothers* loved by God, that you are chosen,

5b and that our Good News came to you not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and with much assurance.

*1:4: The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."
