The Baptism of the Lord

-----

Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

15 As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,

16 John answered them all, "I indeed baptise you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptise you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

21 Now when all the people were baptised, Jesus also had been baptised, and was praying. The sky was opened,

22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying "You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased."

Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11

1 "Comfort, comfort my people," says your God.

2 "Speak comfortably to Jerusalem; and call out to her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins."

3 The voice of one who calls out,
"Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness!
Make a level highway in the desert for our God.

4 Every valley shall be exalted,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The uneven shall be made level,
and the rough places a plain.

5 the LORD's glory shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together;
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it."

9 You who tell good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain.
You who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength.
Lift it up. Don't be afraid.
Say to the cities of Judah, "Behold, your God!"

10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come as a mighty one,
and his arm will rule for him.
Behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.

11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will gather the lambs in his arm,
and carry them in his bosom.
He will gently lead those who have their young.

Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

12 instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world;

13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ;

14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.

3:4 But when the kindness of God our Saviour and his love towards mankind appeared,

5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

7 that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
